A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE RAINMEN

Also See the "Past Members" Page for more info.

The  "Rainmen" have been together since September 2003, although The Rainmen as such, had been in existence for a number of years before that.

The first Rainmen grew out of a band called "Up The Junction" the name obviously taken from the cult 1968 Movie and the famous Squeeze hit from the Seventies.

But even before that, some members of The Rainmen were playing together:-

Present

With the departure of Ian Crumblish to Australia in April 2008, The Rainmen decided to split up and go their separate ways.  Ian will continue to play music in Perth, Western Australia.  Sammy Brown continues with his son Mark and various members to gig out and around the Glasgow / Rutherglen area.  Aeneas Madden remains committed to his "Big Band" gigs and  Mathew McKenzie is recruiting to form a new band.  Possible updates will follow as we find out who's doing what.

2006 - 2008

A new Lead guitarist to replace Simon was introduced in late October 2006:    took up his place along with the remaining members:- Ian Crumblish on Vocals, Flute and Guitars, Sammy Brown on Bass Guitar &  Aeneas Madden on Drums & Percussion. The Rainmen continue to express their musical style in and around Glasgow, and beyond.   Matt unfortunately left in October 2007.

2003 - 2006

The line up of:- Ian Crumblish on Vocals, Flute and Guitars, Sammy Brown on Bass Guitar, Aeneas Madden on Drums & Percussion and Simon Harris on Lead Guitar and backing vocals  played for 3 years all over Scotland, with some memorable gigs.  Simon Harris left in August 2006 to pursue a career in writing & recording with a fellow University colleague.

2001 - 2003

This new band played for a few years with Robert Higgins re-joining eventually, but unfortunately, after a while the band split, and was reformed in 2001 with Ian Crumblish again on Vocals & Guitar, Mike Stanford  on Bass Guitar and Jack Trow on Lead Guitar.  Mike made a hasty retreat, and was replaced on Bass guitar by Sammy Brown.   Sammy introduced Aeneas Madden on the drums again, and soon Drew Phillips joined as the keyboard player.   This line-up didn't last long enough to make any impact, and eventually Drew and Jack left, and in time a new lead guitarist Simon Harris.  joined in April 2003 :

1992 - 1994

Special Branch finally split around 1992, when various other bands were formed by the individual members, "Skipka Pass", and "Up The Junction" among them.  "Up The Junction" was formed by   "Up The Junction" was formed by Ian, with Mike Stanford and sometimes, and sometimes, Jack Clarkin (Bass) Gordon Kent (Keyboards) and Gary Chisholm (Drums)  This band eventually let to the formation of the original  "Rainmen" in 1994.

1982 - 1992

This version of Endless Flight played together for many years.   After a while John Devlin decided to leave the band and a number of drummers were recruited until Aeneas Madden was introduced as the new drummer in 1986.   Again, the line-up settled down for a few years but eventually Aeneas left. This left the core of Sammy, Robert & Ian, who played on as "Special Branch" for a while.

1981 - 1982

In 1981 & 1982, Sammy Brown (Bass Guitar), Robert Higgins (Lead Guitar), Rab Darroch (Vocals & Guitar ) and John Devlin (Drums) were doing the circuits in and around Glasgow known as "Endless Flight".    Ian Crumblish (Vocals, Guitar)  (Vocals, Guitar)  joined the band after a few years abroad, as the new singer when Rab Darroch left in 1982.

The Rainmen would like to take this opportunity to apologise to any past members who feel that they should be included here.  We would also like to take this opportunity to encourage any past members to contact us, preferably with any photographs or anecdotes that you think may be of interest. This page may develop, and hopefully along with the "PAST MEMBERS" page we can offer links and information on the  whereabouts and current projects of former "Rainmen".
